About this project
Premier Inn, Cardiff Bay is a breath-taking addition to our portfolio. The 210-bedroom development, which is a part of the Cardiff Waterside scheme, required our designers to work with the architect to take into consideration the desired aesthetic.
The envelope of the build consisted of a lightweight steel framing system which helped to house the unique shaped windows. Alongside this bespoke feature, the brick slip was also enhanced visually by using eye-catching horizontal saw-toothed bricks at every seventh row. Diagonal feature columns along the hotel’s frontage and a sharp cantilevered building edge were amongst a few of the building’s unique features.
As a result of working alongside the client and supply chain we were able to provide a colour match to deliver a bespoke façade appearance. The installation included over 3,500m2 of direct fix 160mm mineral wool with white flexible brick slips as part of its wall system solution. All components of the project provided the affordable hotel with a long lifespan with low maintenance costs to provide a more economically viable solution compared to traditional brickwork.
As part of the design of the build, we had to accommodate for the structural holding of the large oval windows and the interface between these and the facades. By working with infill SFS we were able to deliver this impressive iconic façade.
